Dig fails to find files a Queensland constable is said to have buried 40 years ago

·

An archaeological dig at the old police station in Mount Larcom, central Queensland, has ended without finding a cache of papers a local officer is said to have buried in the 1980s rather than burn them as ordered, Guardian Australia reports.

A retired officer told the Queensland Police Museum last year that the late Constable Edward Robb, the town's only policeman for years, had defied an order to destroy records more than a decade old. The museum's collections manager, Katherine Figueiredo, and University of Queensland archaeologist Dr Caitlin D'Gluyas led a volunteer team over two days, but the corrugated iron said to mark the spot was never found. D'Gluyas said the files may well still be there, but finding them would need ground-penetrating radar or machine digging.
