Macron to address France as arrests in protest violence pass 2,000

·

President Emmanuel Macron was due to speak to the French public on Sunday evening after another day of violent unrest, Politico Europe reports. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said more than 2,000 people had been detained and more than 600 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters injured.

The protests began last month with student blockades over study conditions and have grown into a nationwide movement against the rising cost of living. Saturday brought looting and burned cars, and one demonstrator died of a heart attack. Macron was to meet Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and senior ministers before the 8pm broadcast. US President Donald Trump blamed immigration for the violence, writing that France was burning, while the mayor of Limoges, where the town hall was set alight, criticised the government's handling of the crisis.
