The office of Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch has ruled that the police shooting of one-year-old Kohen Wiley, who was killed while sitting on his mother's lap, was justified, The Guardian reports.
Officers in Senatobia, a small city near Memphis, were responding to a report on 14 June that the boy's mother, Vellesiya Wiley, and a friend had stolen a pack of nappies. Neither woman has been charged. As their car left the car park, Wiley held up the baby to show there was a child inside, and an officer fired into the vehicle, killing him and wounding the friend.
State investigators said the car was driven towards officers, but an independent autopsy released by the family's lawyer, Ben Crump, suggested the shots came from the side. It is not yet clear whether footage of the shooting will be released.
