The Montreal borough of Saint-Laurent has passed a bylaw keeping electric scooters and other motorised personal mobility devices out of public areas under its control, such as parks and trails, CBC News reports. A local councillor said the decision followed several incidents and near misses over the summer and was meant to protect families and older residents.
The move comes after Quebec extended its e-scooter pilot scheme, which lets anyone aged 14 or over ride on slower roads and bike paths. The trauma director at the Montreal Children's Hospital told CBC that e-scooter trauma cases had risen sharply since the scheme began in 2023, with 112 so far this year against about 80 in 2025. She said nearly 60 per cent of the children treated were under 14.
