At least 53 people were killed and more than 200 injured, mostly young recruits, when Houthi ballistic missiles struck a training camp for Yemeni government forces in Shabwa province on Monday, The Guardian reports. Earlier reports had put the death toll at 18.
Three missiles hit al-Alam camp in the Jardan district while recruits stood in formation, according to the report, making it the deadliest single attack since fighting reignited in September. The wounded were taken to hospital in Ataq, where appeals for blood donors were made.
Rashad al-Alimi, president of the UN-recognised government, called the attack cowardly, vowed a swift response and asked the UN secretary general to designate the Houthis a terrorist organisation. The Houthis said they had targeted Saudi-run forces. An inquiry is expected into why so many troops were gathered within missile range.
