Seventy of the 180 post offices that operated inside TG Jones, the high street chain formerly called WH Smith, have closed this year or are due to close by early 2027, according to Post Office records analysed by The Guardian. Thirty-six have already shut and 34 more are scheduled to go.
The closures are part of a restructuring by owner Modella, which bought and renamed the chain last year and expects to close up to 150 of its 450 shops. Towns including Stevenage, Bracknell and Orpington, and cities such as Hull and York, are each losing two post offices, while Telford's last branch is due to close in January. Essex, the West Midlands and Wales are among the worst affected areas.
The Post Office is looking for new operators, but so far only Stirling has reopened, with a permanent replacement in Ipswich due in November.
