Storm Boelo brings amber wind warning and rail closures to Scotland and northern England

·

Storm Boelo is expected to bring gusts of more than 80mph to northern Britain on Saturday, with an amber wind warning covering Scotland, northern England as far south as Carlisle and north-east Northern Ireland, GB News reports. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said ferries, railways and roads could face widespread disruption over the next 24 to 36 hours.

Network Rail Scotland said services south and west of Kilwinning would stop from 9pm on Saturday and the Oban and Mallaig lines would close from about 10pm, with further Highland routes shut on Sunday and speed limits across much of the network.

The storm follows Storm Austen, which left at least 30,000 homes without power and brought down part of Brighton's West Pier. The Met Office said similar power cuts were possible in the amber areas, while England and Wales should see brighter weather on Sunday.
