The Catholic Archdiocese of New York has agreed an $800 million settlement with about 1,300 people who say they were sexually abused by clergy, according to an Associated Press report carried by PBS NewsHour.
Archbishop Ronald Hicks confirmed the deal in an email to clergy on Saturday, saying it will not be final until it is signed, which is planned for the week of 6 November. It would end more than seven years of litigation, after a framework was agreed in May.
It is the second-largest such settlement involving a US archdiocese, behind the $880 million Los Angeles agreed in 2024. Lawyers for survivors called it a powerful moment for justice. Many of the claims were brought under a 2019 New York law that extended the time abuse survivors have to sue.
