Obama mocks Trump’s tariff war with Canada at Detroit midterm rally

·

Former US president Barack Obama ridiculed Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian goods during a Democratic campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan, on Saturday, ahead of next month's midterm elections, The Canadian Press reports via CTV News.

Mr Obama jokingly described Canada as a "well-known evil empire" known for maple syrup and the comedian Martin Short, and said Mr Trump had alienated Canadians with his treatment of the country and talk of making it the 51st state. He said the damage was especially clear in Michigan, where car industry supply chains are closely tied to Canada.

Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced matching counter-tariffs in September after the US imposed 50 per cent duties on billions of dollars of Canadian goods, including vehicles. Mr Trump has said he will remove some of those duties at the end of the month while adding new ones on other products.
