Nigeria's federal government says it has paid out N249.6bn through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund over the past three years, about 77% of all disbursements since the fund began in 2019, Premium Times reports.
Iziaq Salako, a junior health minister, told a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday that the government plans to extend direct funding to at least 17,600 primary healthcare centres and provide health insurance for about 90,000 people in prisons. A further N40.76bn was approved this month.
The minister said national health insurance enrolment had risen from about 16.2 million people in 2023 to just over 23 million by the third quarter of 2026. The government is also working with the National Assembly to raise the fund's share of the Consolidated Revenue Fund from 1% to 2%.
