The wealthiest 1% of Peruvians took 42% of all new wealth created in the country between 2019 and 2025, according to an Oxfam analysis reported by Al Jazeera. The poorest half of the population received only 1.4%. Oxfam said the share going to the top 1% had risen from about 39% in the period from 2000 to 2019.
A separate survey by Oxfam and the Institute for Peruvian Studies in Lima found that 84% of Peruvians believe the country is run by powerful interests for their own benefit, and around 70% want the government to do more to reduce inequality. Oxfam Peru's director, Alejandra Alayza, said inequality was the result of political choices. The findings come amid years of political instability: Peru has had nine presidents in ten years, the latest being Keiko Fujimori, who took office in July.
