Polish military police have detained a 31-year-old army reservist who holds both Polish and Ukrainian citizenship on suspicion of offering to work for a foreign intelligence service, Notes from Poland reports.
The man, a senior private in the reserve, was taking a course at the Military Medical Academy in Łódź when he was held. He has been remanded in custody for three months and faces up to eight years in prison if convicted. Authorities have not said which country he is suspected of working for.
Deputy defence minister Cezary Tomczyk said the suspect had been carrying out reconnaissance of certain military sites, and that he had only recently become a Polish citizen. The newspaper Rzeczpospolita reported that phones, documents, cash and gold were found in his possession. Poland's security services say espionage investigations have risen sharply over the past two years.
