Serbia's interior ministry has announced the arrest of nine serving police officers and one former officer accused of using excessive force against student protesters last year, Al Jazeera reports. The ministry alleges the suspects mistreated and tortured several injured people held in a garage at a state building in the capital in August 2025, in order to get information from them, frighten them and punish them unlawfully.
The ministry released only initials but said the men belonged to an elite unit, and state broadcaster RTS reported that the head of the police's special anti-terror unit had been detained. The anti-corruption protests began after a railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad killed 16 people in November 2024, and the movement won October's parliamentary elections, ending Aleksandar Vucic's 12-year presidency. It has since pressed for police and security service reform.
