Six people, among them an infant, were killed early on Monday when a speedboat carrying migrants from Turkey struck a Greek coast guard boat and capsized near Lesvos, according to Greek authorities, in a Reuters report carried by Daily Maverick.
The collision happened about 3.5 nautical miles south of Agrilia on the island. Rescuers recovered the bodies of four men, a woman and the baby, while eight survivors were taken to hospital. A 37-year-old Turkish man among the survivors was arrested on suspicion of being the smuggler steering the boat.
Shipping minister Vassilis Kikilias blamed traffickers and said early evidence suggested the speedboat's bow hit the left side of the coast guard vessel, though the exact circumstances are still under investigation. Greece was a main entry point to Europe during the 2015-16 migration crisis.
