Sudan’s soaring fuel prices push up fares and squeeze workers’ wages

·

Rising fuel prices in Sudan are making daily life harder for workers, with bus fares in the capital region climbing steeply, Al Jazeera reports.

One woman told the broadcaster she now works only three days a week because the round trip costs about 11,000 Sudanese pounds, close to half of her monthly salary of 400,000 pounds. Fares on some routes have risen from 700 pounds before the war to as much as 2,500.

The civil war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023, has badly damaged the oil sector. Attacks on the Balila oil field cut supplies to the Khartoum refinery, leaving the country reliant on imports during a global fuel crisis. An economic analyst also blamed strict government rules for fuel importers, including a requirement to deposit 200kg of gold with the central bank, for pushing some companies out.
