Danielle Smith tells UCP separatists to accept referendum result or leave the party

·

Alberta's premier, Danielle Smith, says separatism is a settled question in her United Conservative Party and she does not need the backing of members who want the province to leave Canada, CBC News reports from an interview on its West of Centre programme.

Ms Smith said about 75 per cent of Albertans voted in the referendum to remain in Canada, and anyone wishing to stand as a UCP candidate or sit on its provincial board must accept that result. She said she was giving members time to reflect, and that those who disagreed could join advocacy groups or other parties.

She also said the referendum showed little appetite for constitutional change, while the immigration questions mattered more to voters. A requirement to show citizenship before voting is likely to be the first measure her government brings forward, ahead of the next provincial election in October 2027.
