A Nova Scotia animal rescue group has brought 28 dogs and more than 40 cats back from a trip to Georgia this month, saving them from overcrowded shelters that put animals down, CTV News reports.
The group, Fly With Me, works mainly with shelters in the United States and some in Mexico, and aims to carry out at least four rescue trips a year. Its rescue operations co-ordinator, Daniela Arreola Gala, told CTV that shelters in southern Georgia have a serious overcrowding problem and call on the group for help.
She said all but two of the cats from the latest trip had been adopted, while six of the dogs had found homes and many applications were being worked through. Among those still waiting are a nervous stray called Fig, found in Georgia, and Paquito, a shy dog brought from Mexico City.
