India’s NMC withdraws 2023 medical education rules, prompting accountability concerns

·

India's National Medical Commission has withdrawn its 2023 regulations on maintaining standards in medical education, with effect from 17 October, The Hindu reports.

No single regulation replaces them. The commission said colleges must still file annual disclosure reports under the 2019 law that created it and other rules, and it denies that oversight has been weakened. Critics disagree. Patient safety campaigners and doctors told the newspaper the withdrawn rules set out specific penalties, including fines of up to ₹1 crore for colleges and up to ₹5 lakh for staff who submit false records, as well as enforcement and appeal procedures.

Consumer rights activist Bejon Kumar Misra has written to the government warning that undetected false declarations or weak clinical training could put patients at risk. The change follows nationwide protests over the medical entrance examination.
