West Bengal police guard Christian families who say they were attacked over faith

·

Police in West Bengal have posted officers outside the homes of three Christian families in Paschim Medinipur district who say they were attacked and threatened to make them renounce their faith, The Hindu reports.

A woman's complaint, registered at Chandrakona police station on 20 October, alleges that over three days the families were pressured to convert to Hinduism, forced to take part in rituals, and threatened with violence and sexual assault. Thirteen people, said by the complainant to be linked to the Hindu nationalist group Bajrang Dal, are named, and charges include attempted murder. No arrests had been made by Saturday.

Herod Mullick, of the Christian forum Bangiya Christiya Pariseba, told the newspaper there had been about 45 such incidents in recent months, with police complaints registered in around a dozen.
