New Zealanders travelling this summer should expect to pay more for flights than a year ago, an economist has told RNZ.
Stats NZ figures show domestic flights booked in September cost 5.1 per cent more than a year earlier, while international fares rose 12.3 per cent. Economist Benje Patterson said the fuel crisis was driving the increase and predicted domestic holidaymakers would remain cautious with spending as living costs stay high.
Air New Zealand said it had raised fares because of much higher jet fuel costs, which the extra revenue had not fully covered, and advised people to book early for the best prices. The airline reported carrying 1 per cent fewer passengers in the first quarter of its financial year, though Mr Patterson said strong growth in overseas visitors should help tourism operators.
