Democrat Mary Peltola says the economy is the overriding issue in her challenge to Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, the Anchorage Daily News reports.
The former congresswoman, who has campaigned in more than 50 Alaska communities, said high prices for heating fuel, food, power and travel matter more to voters than any other question. Polls show the race is close, and spending by candidates and outside groups has passed $100 million.
Ms Peltola said she would work to stop the war with Iran from escalating, blaming it for higher fuel costs, and has proposed scrapping income tax for Americans earning under $92,000 by raising taxes on the very wealthy, though the paper noted some of her plans may be hard to deliver. Mr Sullivan has defended his record, pointing to tax cuts and expanded oil drilling in Alaska.
