Nova Scotia children's author and teacher Gary R. Gray Jr. has moved back to Preston after years teaching abroad, CTV News reports.
Mr Gray left for a teaching contract in Kuwait after a job fair and later worked in Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam. He told CTV that he returned for family reasons and because his writing career is growing, with books scheduled into the early 2030s, and that he wants to be present for children in the community he writes about.
His latest picture book, Spendin' Time, which follows a boy running errands with his grandfather and draws on his own memories, was showcased at the Boston Book Festival last weekend. His first book, I'm From, is set in Preston, Canada's oldest Black community, and he said children respond strongly to seeing themselves in stories.
