When made to pick a candidate in this year's US midterm races, SpaceXAI's Grok 4.7 model chose the Republican in 92% of answers while OpenAI's GPT-6.1 Sol chose the Democrat in 97%, according to a study reported by TechCrunch.
The research, by the studio Convovo led by Cornell professor Tapan Parikh, put the same question to both models through their developer APIs across nearly 500 races; the two agreed less than 10% of the time. The consumer chatbots declined to answer, and OpenAI said ChatGPT is designed to be politically neutral. SpaceXAI did not respond in time.
The study also found the models leaned on different sources, with Grok often citing conservative voter guides and X, and GPT relying on Wikipedia, AP, Axios and Reddit. Mr Parikh said such hidden leanings could surface in everyday conversations about elections.
