The US Supreme Court has allowed New Hampshire to stop voters using student ID cards as identification at polling stations in next month's midterm elections, The Guardian reports.
In a short unsigned order, the court backed an appeal supported by the Republican National Committee, citing the principle that lower courts should not change election rules close to polling day. A lower court judge had blocked a state directive barring student IDs, even as a fallback form of identification.
The state's Republican governor, Kelly Ayotte, signed a law this year removing student IDs from the accepted list. Voting rights groups argue the change will shut out young voters without a driving licence or passport, while Republicans say it guards against fraud. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, saying the lower court had not erred.
