A court in Thailand has given the jailed human rights lawyer Arnon Nampa a further two years and eight months in prison for royal insult, taking his total sentence to more than 34 years, CNA reports, citing a rights group and his lawyer.
Arnon, 42, became prominent during the youth-led protests of 2020 that called for reform of the monarchy and the military-drafted constitution. He has been in prison since 2023 on several lese majeste convictions. The latest case relates to a 2020 protest outside the headquarters of Siam Commercial Bank, where he called for transparency over a transfer of shares from the Crown Property Bureau. Four others were sentenced alongside him.
His lawyer, Krisadang Nutcharut, told AFP the law had become a political tool against opponents.
