The independent inquiry into last year's fatal Wang Fuk Court fire in Hong Kong has found insufficient evidence that former district councillor Peggy Wong took part in bid-rigging over the estate's renovation, Hong Kong Free Press reports.
The blaze at the Tai Po housing estate killed 168 people. The inquiry's final report said Wong's presence at owners' meetings and her perceived influence over the owners' board, which picked a HK$300 million renovation plan and the firms carrying it out, had sharpened the dispute. She helped collect about a quarter of the proxy votes at a 2021 meeting and a fifth at a 2024 meeting.
Residents testified that she urged them not to replace the board, wrongly warning they could lose subsidies. The report follows the resignation of housing chief Winnie Ho.
