Trump administration weighs lifting sanctions on Russian Direct Investment Fund

·

The Trump administration is looking at whether to remove US sanctions from the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), the independent outlet Meduza reports, citing sources who spoke to The New York Times.

According to the report, Moscow is pressing for relief so the fund can take part in supplying Russian diesel to the United States. One source said the US Treasury is reviewing the fund's application under standard procedures, and that RDIF must show the grounds for the sanctions no longer apply.

The fund is run by Kirill Dmitriev, a central figure in talks between Moscow and Washington who has been promoting joint business ventures. It is best known for backing the Sputnik V vaccine. The Biden administration sanctioned RDIF four days after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with the Treasury calling it widely regarded as a slush fund for Vladimir Putin.
