Update: Army expected to hold board of inquiry into deadly CFB Wainwright fire

·

The Canadian Army is expected to investigate the fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta, which killed four soldiers and injured 39 people, through a board of inquiry, The Globe and Mail reports. Such boards can compel evidence and make recommendations, but their hearings and findings are not automatically published, which has drawn criticism.

Retired colonel and law professor Michel Drapeau said public and media access to this inquiry was essential, noting families can wait years for reports that are often redacted. The Department of National Defence said a wind-driven fire moved rapidly into a training area on Saturday afternoon. A fire marshal team, the military's National Investigation Service and the RCMP are also investigating. Maj-Gen Wade Rutland would not say whether findings would be released.
