Binance co-chief executive Richard Teng has said the attackers behind last week's record theft from the crypto exchange spent months working their way in, using fake job interviews, malware and compromised internal AI tools, CNBC reports. He told the broadcaster that in June hackers tricked an engineer into installing a fake developer tool, and in September posed as recruiters and gave another engineer a coding test containing hidden malware.
From there, he said, they moved through internal AI tools and gained access to the system that authorises wallet transactions. More than $6.3 billion was taken in the 29 October attack. Teng said Binance had replaced 98 per cent of the affected assets. He did not himself blame North Korea but acknowledged the FBI has linked the attack to a North Korean hacking group known as TraderTraitor.
