Meat suppliers in the UK have been targeted in the wave of cyber-attacks that has pushed up temperatures in supermarket refrigeration systems across Europe, The Guardian reports. Paul Chichester, operations director at the National Cyber Security Centre, said officials were helping the firms concerned and that so far the effect nationally had been small. No British supermarket chain has been directly hit.
Retailers in Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden reported fridge problems on Monday, following similar incidents in France last month. Security researchers said attacks on decoy fridge controls set up to attract hackers resembled operations linked to Russia. The NCSC, which is part of GCHQ, declined to say who was responsible but said the attacks were not AI-enabled and exploited long-known weaknesses, including old equipment left online with default passwords.
