Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov was due in Tehran on Monday, a day after meeting Gulf Co-operation Council foreign ministers in Bahrain who urged Moscow to use its influence to stop Iranian attacks on its neighbours, The National reports. The trip comes as tension rises over shipping security and the risk of renewed fighting between Iran and the United States, after President Donald Trump warned that Washington could finish the job unless Tehran changed course.

Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded that Iran had emerged stronger last time and warned it had unfinished business of its own. In Manama, Lavrov presented an updated Russian plan for collective security in the Gulf based on direct talks between regional states. The GCC said its members had faced more than 7,000 missile and drone attacks since the war began in February.
