More than 400,000 people marched across France on Saturday over school funding and the cost of living, and the main Paris demonstration ended in clashes with police, according to an Associated Press report carried by PBS NewsHour.

The Interior Ministry put turnout at 410,000, including 110,000 in Paris, where the route was kept to the south-east of the city, away from districts damaged in rioting last weekend. Near Porte de Vincennes, some protesters threw objects and police responded with tear gas and water cannon. Prosecutors said 64 people were arrested in Paris.

Police also used tear gas in cities including Lyon, Strasbourg and Marseille. The movement began last month over staff shortages at one school and has grown into a wider challenge to President Emmanuel Macron's government before next May's presidential election.
