Update: Paraguay opposition moves to impeach President Peña over ueno bank collapse

·

In a new development in Paraguay's banking crisis, opposition lawmakers have begun moves to impeach President Santiago Peña and Vice-President Pedro Alliana after the central bank shut the digital lender ueno, The Rio Times reports. Savers and retirees protested in Asunción on Tuesday after finding their bank cards no longer worked.

Ueno has about three million customers and held public funds, including deposits from the state pension fund. Peña held shares in the group behind the bank until 2025, and the central bank chief he appointed, Carlos Carvallo, who resigned on Tuesday, previously ran its forerunner finance company. Eight directors and officials, including founder Federico Vázquez, have been detained. The government says there are no grounds for impeachment, and no vote has been scheduled. Holders of ueno's US$350 million in dollar bonds still await news.
