Update: Paraguay prosecutors charge Santiago Peña over Ueno Bank collapse

·

Prosecutors in Paraguay have formally accused ousted president Santiago Peña in the Ueno Bank case and asked the courts to hold him in custody before trial, MercoPress reports. Peña, who left office after Friday’s Senate vote, gave evidence on Saturday. He is alleged to have been an instigator of breach of trust and a perpetrator of self-serving administration, charges he rejects. Carlos Carvallo, the former central bank chief already being held, faces related accusations. Investigators say that from 2023 to 2026 the bank took large sums from public bodies and the pension system while extending irregular loans to companies tied to its owners, the Vázquez Group. Almost three million account holders lost access to their money. After protests outside his home in Asunción, Peña was moved from house arrest overnight to the Presidential Escort Regiment barracks. Incoming president Pedro Alliana said affected savers would get their money back.
