The US government has approved sales of Nvidia’s H200 artificial-intelligence chips to Chinese firms with ties to blacklisted companies, The Verge reports, citing the New York Times. One approved buyer, New Matrix, was found to have empty offices described as a hollow grey shell with wires dangling from the ceiling. The Times said little public information exists about the 17-month-old firm, and that a building directory and the local property manager had no record of it. Its owners have ties to a Chinese private-equity firm blacklisted by Washington since 2024. The paper portrayed this as part of a wider pattern of companies linked to restricted entities being cleared to buy the chips. Nvidia was barred from selling processors to China under the Biden administration, but limits were eased under President Trump after Nvidia agreed to give the government a 15 percent cut of sales.
