Aleksandar Vučić has conceded that his party lost Serbia's snap parliamentary election to the student-led protest movement, The Guardian reports, a shift that appears to end his 12 years in power.
Speaking to supporters at his party's Belgrade headquarters on Sunday evening, Vučić said a stratified sample of results made it clear his side had been defeated.
Monitors CeSID and Ipsos put turnout at 67.6 per cent by 7pm local time, the highest since Yugoslavia broke up in 1992, with some voters queuing for up to two hours. The students' final rally in Belgrade last week drew an estimated 150,000 people.
The movement grew out of two years of anti-corruption protests that followed the deadly collapse of a station canopy in Novi Sad in 2024. Some observers had feared unrest if the result had been close. Full official results are still to come.
