US lawmakers say intelligence links Russia to deepfake campaign before midterms

·

Russia is running an online campaign using AI-generated content to discredit candidates in the US midterm elections on 3 November, two senior Democrats on congressional intelligence committees have said, according to Meduza, citing Politico.

Senator Mark Warner and Representative Jim Himes said their view was based on a classified intelligence report received this week. They said Moscow could target both Democrats and Republicans who back Ukraine, and that no proven attempts to hack election systems had been found.

Researchers have tracked fake videos on X in which deepfaked celebrities urge Americans not to vote Democrat, attributed to a Russian network known as Matryoshka. Another operation, Storm-1516, which researchers have linked to Russian military intelligence, spread a fabricated allegation against the Texas Democrat James Talarico this week, Meduza reports, citing NBC News.
