WA doctors warn Australians over Bali full-body tattoos under general anaesthetic

·

Doctors in Western Australia are raising concerns about a growing trend for Australians to travel to Bali for full-body tattoos done while they are under general anaesthetic, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Thousands of people have had the procedure this year, in which as many as nine artists work on one person at once, completing in about 10 hours what would normally take several sessions. It costs about $16,000. A tattoo artist in Kuta said around 70 per cent of his clients were Australian, and that customers fill in health forms and have a hospital check-up before the work, which he said takes place in a licensed hospital.

The procedure is not offered in Australia. The president of the Australian Medical Association in WA, Kyle Hoath, questioned the extra health risks of anaesthetic for what should be a simple procedure.
