Walter Koenig, the actor who played the young Russian navigator Pavel Chekov in the original Star Trek series and several of its films, has died aged 90, the Associated Press reports in a story carried by the Anchorage Daily News.
His agent, Zachery McGinnis, said he died on Monday at his home in North Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Born in Chicago in 1936, Koenig studied at the University of California, Los Angeles and trained as an actor in New York before appearing in television series in the early 1960s. Star Trek ran on NBC from 1966 to 1969, and Chekov was the only Soviet-bloc crew member on the Enterprise bridge.
His former castmate George Takei said on X that his heart was heavy and called Koenig a writer, teacher and loyal friend. Koenig was best man at Takei's wedding in 2008.
