Ada Colau says US refused her visa over Gaza flotilla role

·

Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona who leads Spain's left-wing Broad Front coalition, has accused US President Donald Trump of barring her from a summit in Puerto Rico because of her pro-Palestinian activism, Politico Europe reports.

Colau said her online application to attend a meeting of progressive city leaders in Caguas on 3 and 4 November was rejected. When she sought to appeal at the US embassy in Madrid, she said officials asked only about her part in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which tried to reach Gaza in late 2025; she was detained by Israeli forces for three days and deported.

Writing on Telegram, she called the decision shameful. The US State Department did not immediately comment. Politico notes that Spain holds a general election on 29 November, and that Trump is unpopular among Spanish voters.
