Inquest hears warnings were missed before Elizabeth Struhs died in Toowoomba

·

A Queensland inquest into the death of eight-year-old Elizabeth Struhs has heard how government agencies repeatedly judged her safe despite warnings from her doctors, The Guardian reports.

Elizabeth died in Toowoomba in January 2022 after her insulin for type 1 diabetes was withdrawn. Her parents and 12 other members of a small religious group were convicted of her manslaughter last year. In 2019 she had nearly died before diagnosis, yet a child safety officer assessed her as safe two days later.

Over nine days of evidence, specialists from the Queensland children's hospital were said to have warned that her mother's beliefs could undermine treatment. One officer said she may have been influenced by the family's comfortable home. Coroner Ainslie Kirkegaard said there was a lack of curiosity about the mother's views and will deliver findings next year.
