The governor of Nigeria's Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has promised that anyone responsible for the reported deaths of 10 people in a boat capsize will face the law, Premium Times reports.
The boat overturned on Tuesday evening in Kula, in the Akuku-Toru area, during a confrontation over the planned removal of an oil storage vessel. Residents had opposed the removal, citing an alleged oil spill and demanding clean-up and compensation. Police have confirmed the incident but say they are still establishing the number of victims and what happened.
The governor's chief of staff gave the assurance when Kula residents marched to Government House in Port Harcourt. The vessel's owner, Max Shipping Services, expressed sadness at the deaths but denied responsibility for the operation, saying the vessel had been hired to a contractor and was being recovered over unpaid fees.
