Meta has postponed the start of its new business terms until 20 November after publishers warned they could let the company scrape news websites for AI training, The Verge reports.
The terms had been due to take effect on 30 October. Meta had already removed wording about training its products, but legal experts said the revised text still did not rule out such use. The News/Media Alliance wrote to chief executive Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday warning of severe harm to publishers, and advertisers and publishers in the EU and UK asked regulators to intervene.
A Meta spokesperson, Daniel Roberts, told The Verge the delay would give the company time to explain to partners what was and was not changing, including how its web crawlers work and that sites can still use robots.txt files to set preferences.
