Anthony Lee, who ran campaigning for the Conservatives, has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting cheating by betting on when the 2024 general election would be held, GB News reports.
Southwark Crown Court heard that Lee, 49, used inside information linked to a private Downing Street meeting called by Rishi Sunak in March 2024 to bet that the election would be held in July. He and his wife, Laura Lee, then a parliamentary candidate, placed more than £2,000 in bets between March and May and stood to win over £23,000.
Lee received 10 months and two weeks, suspended for 12 months, while his wife, who admitted one charge, received four months and two weeks, suspended for a year. The judge said their conduct risked undermining public confidence in the party.
