Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli won the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, but missed out on clinching the Formula 1 world championship by a single point, 1News reports.
The 20-year-old Italian led from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas and finished 16 seconds ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen third and Lewis Hamilton fourth. It was Antonelli's ninth win of the season.
He needed a 125-point lead to seal the title in Austin but ended the day 123 points clear of his Mercedes team-mate George Russell, who finished eighth. Hamilton is 124 points behind. Antonelli, who could become the sport's youngest champion, will have another chance at next weekend's Mexican Grand Prix.
New Zealand's Liam Lawson finished ninth for Racing Bulls, taking two more points.
