Vadym Sukharevskyi chosen to lead Ukraine’s Marines, Ukrainian media report

·

Colonel Vadym Sukharevskyi, the former head of Ukraine's Unmanned Systems Forces, has been picked to command the country's Marine Corps, according to Ukrainian media reports cited by the Kyiv Independent.

Ukrainska Pravda and Interfax-Ukraine both reported, citing sources, that he will take over from Major General Dmytro Deliatytskyi. There was no official announcement at the time of the reports.

Sukharevskyi was put in charge of the new drone branch in 2024 but was removed within a year, reportedly after disputes with the then commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. He has since served as a deputy commander of the Eastern Group of Forces. The appointment is part of a wider reshuffle of the high command under Syrskyi's successor, Mykhailo Drapatyi. The Marines, formally part of the navy, have fought in some of the war's heaviest battles, including Mariupol and Krynky.
