The first train on the extension of Sydney's metro line to Bankstown has run, ending more than two years of replacement bus services, The Guardian Australia reports.

The 4.31am service left Bankstown on time on Friday and reached Sydenham, the line's previous terminus, in just over 20 minutes, before continuing to Tallawong in the north-west. The driverless line now runs continuously for 66km.

Hundreds of rail enthusiasts queued an hour before departure, many wearing metro-themed clothing and carrying homemade signs, and the train left full. New South Wales transport minister John Graham arrived only minutes before it departed. At early stops such as Punchbowl, Wiley Park and Lakemba, a few commuters squeezed on board. A standard six-car metro train holds about 1,100 passengers.
