UK Development Minister Kirsty McNeill has said new British sanctions on military commanders accused of atrocities, including sexual violence, when El Fasher in Sudan fell are intended to hold those responsible to account, AllAfrica reports. Speaking in Geneva on 4 November, a year after the North Darfur capital fell, she said she had met the UN fact-finding mission on Sudan, which the UK helped establish.
McNeill described Sudan as close to the top of the UK's priorities and said tackling what remains the world's largest humanitarian crisis needed access and respect for international humanitarian law as well as funding. The British government has said UK-backed investigations have exposed deliberate starvation and sexual violence by all sides in the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023.
