Medical and legal specialists are cautioning people in the UK against cosmetic surgery holidays abroad, warning that cut-price deals can lead to infection, disfigurement or death, The Guardian reports.
Nora Nugent, a consultant plastic surgeon who once led the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, said the dangers extend beyond the operation itself, including blood clots linked to flying and a lack of face-to-face aftercare. Turkey is the most common destination, largely because procedures cost less than in Britain.
The British College of Aesthetic Medicine has published a checklist urging patients to verify surgeons' qualifications, nearby emergency care and insurance cover. Chrissie Wolfe of medical negligence firm Lupa Law said claims after botched surgery abroad are hard to pursue and may pay far less than in the UK, and urged caution over bundled or time-limited offers.
