Indonesia's national police chief insists the investigation into alleged tapping of President Prabowo Subianto's phone is a straightforward criminal probe, even as the affair sharpens tensions with former president Joko Widodo, the South China Morning Post reports.
General Suyudi Ario Seto said those arrested should serve as a warning inside the force and rejected suggestions of a political feud. Prabowo took power in 2024 as Widodo's preferred successor, with Widodo's son Gibran as vice-president; parliamentarians are separately considering a probe into Gibran's eligibility.
The clash highlights how quickly the Prabowo-Jokowi partnership has cooled since the election landslide.
